This week, South School First Graders read the book "Chrysanthemum" by Kevin Henkes. The book's theme centers on the importance of being yourself and being proud of yourself. In celebration of our uniqueness, our class drew life-sized self-portraits. After we were finished, each student could share their portrait with the class, and the class discussed kind words that described the student. These words were written on their self-portraits. It was so fun to see the unique student portraits and the kind words of their classmates.

After a few days of testing for iReady Mrs. Porterfield's 5th grade classes at South were able to get out and get some fresh air today in this fantastic Fall weather Mrs. Porterfield wrote a grant for a classroom set of MP3 players loaded with ELA, Science, and Social Studies related podcasts that correlate to Missouri Standards. Today, they listened to a summary about the Boston Tea Party and answered questions after the walk. This is an amazing program that helps get kids active, outdoors, and ties into ELA standards for listening skills.

Mrs. Applegate’s third-grade music class at South School enjoyed patting and clapping beat patterns to a song they learned last week. They discovered they had to concentrate hard to be successful.

Today our 5th grade students worked on a STEM project, in random groups. Students had to make the longest paper chain using only 2 pieces of paper and a foot-long piece of tape. The students had to plan for how wide their links would be and how to utilize the tape to create the longest chain. This activity teaches critical thinking and innovation.
